Is Unai Emery receiving too much criticism?

Is Unai Emery receiving too much criticism for Arsenal’s start?  Its certainly a topic that has sparked debate amongst Arsenal fans, and there is certainly a strong argument for both sides, and one that I can’t quite decide on myself, so I’m going to weigh up both points of views and see which side is perhaps more justified than the other. Reasons suggesting Emery’s criticism is unwarranted: For a start, lets look at the facts; we’re third in the league. We’re not a title winning team, this squad isn’t at the level required to challenge Liverpool or Man City, so to currently be the best of the rest certainly raises eyebrows as to why Unai is getting so much criticism. We’re third in the league with the third best squad in the league. Whilst performances have been far from convincing in the league, we’re still picking up wins, we’re still getting more points than our rivals. Third was always going to be the best we were going to get this season and that’s where we are. W

The disastrous implications of defeat in the Europa League final

After an utterly horrendous, gutless performance from Arsenal in the Europa League final in an inexcusable 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, I will cover the implications of failure to qualify for next seasons Champions League. I have waited a couple of days to put my thoughts into a post just to give myself some time to calm down from an utterly atrocious performance, and to try and put some perspective into what we’ve achieved this season. The performance yesterday was not good enough. It will be another season in the Europa League, which is a failure given our position earlier in the season. To think we just needed to hold on against relegation threatened Brighton at home, or to have beaten Palace to qualify for the Champions League via league position does make you wonder about the players mentality. These were games which we simply should have won without question, and ultimately when it came down to it the players were not good enough. these players don’t deserve Champions League fo

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace match review

Arsenal's 11-game winning run came to an end at Crystal Palace, who scored from the penalty spot twice in a pulsating 2-2 draw on Super Sunday. Palace started brightly with Wilfried Zaha hitting the post and Andros Townsend firing wide after a free-flowing move down the left wing. Arsenal were lacklustre, with numerous misplaced chances and were on the backfoot for the beginning of the game. The opening goal came just before the break when Skhodran Mustafi needlessly tripped Cheikhou Kouyate inside the area. Despite the fact there was minimal contact, the referee was always going to give it when you dive in in the 6-yard box. Milivojevic made amends for his miss at Goodison Park, finding the bottom corner with a perfect penalty, sending Berndt Leno the wrong way. As has been the case for most games this season, Arsenal responded after the break and were level inside six minutes, with Granit Xhaka smashing home a phenomenal free-kick past Wayne Hennessey from the corner of

Arsenal vs Leicester match review

Arsenal stormed to a 3-1 victory over Leicester after a Mesut Ozil masterclass and a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace gave them, despite their start, a comfortable win and a 10 th in a row in all competitions. It looked like Arsenal's winning streak would be tested when, inside the opening six minutes, Kelechi Iheanacho saw a shot deflected over and then had a curling effort saved by Bernd Leno. Arsenal were open at the back and loose in possession and were fortunate not to concede a penalty when the ball hit Rob Holding's hand in the box. Leno then made a sharp low save to keep out a powerful header from Harry Maguire before Leicester's pressure eventually was rewarded, with Chilwell bursting up the left flank, taking the ball past Bellerin with a brilliant first touch and then finishing with the help of a deflection off the Spaniard. But the goal belatedly sparked Arsenal into life and they levelled before the break. Mesut Ozil's well-taken goal on the strok

Arsenal vs Fulham match review

Arsenal stormed to a 5-1 victory against London rivals Fulham as braces for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette gave them an emphatic victory at Craven Cottage for a ninth consecutive victory in all competitions. The game started off brightly and evenly, with both teams getting time on the ball yet neither creating clear cut chances, until Fulham were caught on the counter attack by Arsenal in the 29 th minute, where Alex Iwobi fed Nacho Monreal who put the ball across the box into Lacazette’s feet, who took a phenomenal touch that took him away from his   before firing the ball into the near corner with an excellent finish, wrongfooting keeper Marcus Bettinelli. Arsenal started to take control of the game, looking comfortable on the ball and moving it forward quickly, but one sloppy pass from Nacho Monreal meant that Fulham had a route back into the game, with Luciano Vietto playing an inch perfect through ball to Andre Schurrle, who expertly lifted the ball over

Arsenal 2-0 Watford match review

Arsenal defeat Watford despite lacklustre performance as they claim a flattering 2-0 victory An own goal from Craig Cathcart and a slick finish from Mesut Ozil gave Arsenal an unconvincing seventh straight victory for Unai Emery. Watford's confidence has not been shaken since their perfect start to the campaign was ended by a draw and a defeat from their last two games, and they pressed Arsenal from the off at the Emirates. But they could have been behind within five minutes, when Christian Kabasele's aggressive challenge in the box caught Alexandre Lacazette. The forward tried to stay upright but stumbled over a second later - and it was enough for referee Anthony Taylor to wave for a goal kick, despite it being evident there was contact. Watford failed to to take advantage, with midfielder Will Hughes failing to make Arsenal pay when he planted a volley wide from the edge of the box minutes later, when he should have found the target given the time he had to shoot.
